FDM printers and SLA printers have proven popular in many industries and their use continues to grow. Which 3D printer suits you?

FDM or SLA?

SLA

Stereolithography (SLA) is a 3D printing technology that is particularly valued for its ability to create models with a high level of detail, smooth surface finish, high dimensional accuracy and where tolerances are the focus.

The process is based on liquid resin being hardened with the help of a projected image using UV light or several precise light beams to form the desired structures.

The precise technology enables prints with fine resolution and high surface finish immediately after printing, making it ideal for visualization models, miniatures, final product and prototypes where aesthetics and precision are crucial.

FDM

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is one of the most popular techniques in 3D printing, especially at the consumer level. The technology is known for its wide range of materials, high precision, functional parts/details and the ability to print large parts at a competitive cost. FDM is ideal for rapid prototyping, low-volume production, and end-use parts.

FDM printers work by melting and extruding thermoplastic filaments, such as ABS and PLA, through a heated nozzle. The molten material is applied layer by layer to a build platform, and each layer is added until the model is complete. This method usually requires minimal post-processing and is particularly effective for creating proof-of-concept models as well as simple, cost-effective prototypes.

Thanks to its ease of use and flexibility, FDM is an excellent choice for both hobby users and professional applications where larger print details and functional parts are needed quickly.

While some may choose one technique over the other, many see the benefit of using both techniques alongside each other and benefiting from their strengths. Either way, 3D printing is a great way to quickly take a digital design and turn it into a physical reality!
